A Study of Swiss Army As A Luxury Watch Brand (VIDEO)

Air Boss Mach 8 – $1995What does the $2000 Swiss Army watch look like?

It looks like the watch to the right.  Here you see the Victorinox Air Boss Mach 8 Special Edition.  This 45mm watch is leading the brand into unchartered territory – the territory of luxury timepieces.  Instead of the quartz movement you’d typically find in an SA timepiece, the Air Boss happens to have a Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph inside.  And instead of a solid case back, you have a sapphire crystal exhibition back. And instead of a pin buckle, you have a double deployant clasp.  From a distance, everything about this Swiss Army watch doesn’t make us think Swiss Army.

But, just like the $300 Swiss Army chronos have always been fan favorites, watches that represent subtle style with excellent capabilities, so too do their new mechanical brothers.  The idea of spending $2000 on a Swiss Army might raise of few brows, but we had the opportunity to test two of them for a full week, and we’ve got to admit, the same traits that we like about the $300 Victorinox watches translate through to the $2000 mechanical versions.
