A Patek Philippe Calatrava Gifted by Michael Jordan: Now You Can Be Like Mike, And Wear A Patek

by on Oct.25, 2010, under Review, What's New

Coming up for auction at Sotheby’s Important Watches and Clocks auction in New York City on October 27 is a watch made by one of the most respected manufacturers given by one of the most talented basketball players to one of the most innovative basketball coaches.

We are talking about a Patek Philippe Calatrava (reference 5096J) given by Michael Jordan to Tex Winter, who was at that time an Assistant Coach to the Chicago Bulls.

Tex is known as one of the men that helped popularize the triangle offense (he even wrote the book on it) and he had a successful career coaching including serving as head coach of the Houston Rockets, Marquette, Kansas State, Washington, and Northwestern, as well as serving as an assistant to Phil Jackson with both the Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.

The watch was purchased on Christmas Eve 1997 at a jeweler in Chicago. Perhaps it was the product of a little last minute Christmas shopping by His Airness? Jordan was in the midst of his final season with the Bulls and on his way to winning his sixth NBA Championship and one of his five MVP awards.

This 18kt gold watch is 33mm and has “Thanks  MJ” engraved on the exhibition caseback. It is a classy watch from arguably the greatest roundball player of all time.
